The Hoole Intelligence report shuddered at the news of soul superhero Isaac Hayes' passing this Sunday. By way of dedication, here's a little something the man put together for the soundtrack of the blaxploitation movie "Three Tough Guys."
Rap fans will immediately recognize the groove as it was sampled for the Geto Boys classic "Mind Playin' Tricks on Me."
As good as that song is, the original is better (and surely better than the forgotten movie it was made for). "Hung Up On My Baby" is a funk rock scorcher with the emotional sweep of orchestral music, yadayadayada... I'll let the song speak for itself.

Everything I read about El-P's 2002 album, Fantastic Damage steered me away from buying the thing. Having bought and loved Company Flow's Funcrusher Plus LP, I knew what kind of excess El-P was capable of, and the reviews all described blistering, fractured beats. Without the discipline of artistic partners, I figured there was a good chance his rhymes would be unstructured, asymmetrical. My tastes were tending toward short, streamlined pop with nice hooks, so I wasn't going to buy.
It was on the strength of this one song, which I heard while browsing at a record store, that I changed my mind. The simple beat is probably the toughest of any rap song I've heard. The grating, distorted noise swirling in and out of the beat and the intensity of El-P's delivery ties the song as much to hardcore punk as with rap in my mind. The lyrics have no discernible theme or topic -- they are cool sounding gibberish delivered with a dirty south cadence, strictly in the service of the beat.
Nothing else on the album strikes my fancy like "Deep Space 9mm," but this is the rare case where the price of the album is not to much to pay for one strong single.
