The NIMBYs of the Fighting Southeast!

Comments

I'm a ten year resident of Southeast, have been a participant in several community groups for the past six years and currently work for a vilified human service agency in the Rainier Valley. It's a brave person who speaks out against the NIMBY's of Southeast Seattle. I hope you have thick skin. I applaud your effort to get another side of the story out. The article is well written and well substantiated. I look forward to reading more of what you have to say. Thank you for presenting a less talked about position. You rock!

Bravo for such a great job of writing what so many of us "newcomers" have thought about the people who purport to represent our interests in SE Seattle.

Bravo for such a great job of writing what so many of us "newcomers" have thought about the people who purport to represent our interests in SE Seattle. By newcomer, I mean someone like myself who has only lived in the area for 11 years.

The SOV folks and their ilk will eventually wash away like so much detritus left behind a storm after the trains are up and running. These are the same people who nearly botched the SE area getting $50M via the Rainier Valley Community Development Fund to help local businesses survive light rail construction. By the way, there are more businesses along the alingment today than when it started.

Like it or not, the Valley is being taken over by smart people open to change who have the knowhow to make sure that change is implemented in the best ways. Here's a nice piece from the Seattle Times outlining just a few of the forces at work. Note the line about our part of the city seeing more private investment than its seen in 30 years. I count that as a good thing.

Thanks for sharing. Very thorough and illuminating. Its always heartening to see community activist that don't want to live in the past, rather they want to live in a better future.

Thanks Adam,

My next writing project is a profile of South Seattle's East African immigrant community. Though it mostly goes unstated, the SEDC fight has been in large part about how low income residents, like the East African community, should be properly incorporated into mainstream civic politics. To date, it's almost exclusively been people outside those communities who have been setting the parameters of the debate.

My object is to paint the picture of what life is like for everyday East African immigrants, what role community-based organizations play in their lives, and how those orgs fit into the broader field of civic participation in the Southeast District.
